Functional imaging with tracers, for bone, cardiac, thyroid, and renal studies.
Nuclear medicine uses a small amount of radioactive tracer to show how organs and tissues are functioning, not just how they look.
Bone conditions, thyroid and kidney function, heart blood flow, infection, and certain tumors, by highlighting areas of abnormal activity.
You’ll receive a tracer by injection, swallowing, or inhaling, then wait while it travels to the area being studied before imaging. Timing varies by exam.
Preparation varies by exam and by patient. Please follow the specific instructions provided by the imaging center where your study is scheduled, and let them know about any conditions (such as diabetes or kidney disease) that affect medications or eating.
