What it is

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves (no radiation) to produce real-time images. A handheld probe and a little gel are moved over the skin.

What it finds

Conditions of the abdomen and pelvis, the thyroid and other small parts, blood flow in vessels, and pregnancy. It also guides needle procedures.

What to expect

You lie on a table while the sonographer moves a probe over the area with warm gel. It’s painless and uses no radiation. Some exams need specific preparation, which your imaging center will explain when you schedule.
