CT uses X-rays and a computer to create fast, detailed cross-sectional images of the body. It’s a workhorse for the chest, abdomen, blood vessels, and trauma.
Bleeding, clots, infections, tumors, kidney stones, and injuries. It’s often the first scan ordered in an emergency because it’s fast and thorough.
You lie on a table that slides through a ring-shaped scanner. Some exams use a contrast dye, by mouth or IV, to highlight specific areas. It’s quick and painless.
Preparation varies by exam and by patient. Please follow the specific instructions provided by the imaging center where your study is scheduled, and let them know about any conditions (such as diabetes or kidney disease) that affect medications or eating.
