What it is

DEXA is a quick, very low-dose X-ray that measures bone density to assess osteoporosis and fracture risk.

What it finds

Low bone density (osteopenia and osteoporosis) and your risk of future fractures. It also tracks how bone health changes over time.

What to expect

You lie still on a padded table while a scanning arm passes over your hip and spine. It’s painless, fast, and uses a fraction of the radiation of a chest X-ray.
