Metabolic and anatomic imaging together, for staging cancer and measuring response to treatment.
PET/CT combines a PET scan, which shows how tissues are functioning, with a CT scan, which shows anatomy. Together they pinpoint disease activity and its exact location.
Used mainly in cancer care, to stage disease, find where it has spread, and measure how well treatment is working. It also has roles in some heart and brain conditions.
You’ll receive a small injection of a radioactive tracer and rest quietly for about an hour while it circulates, then lie still for the scan. Plan for a visit of a couple of hours; the scan itself is shorter.
Preparation varies by exam and by patient. Please follow the specific instructions provided by the imaging center where your study is scheduled, and let them know about any conditions (such as diabetes or kidney disease) that affect medications or eating.
